A Dog's Love is Forever...
As some of you know, we added a third member to our pack of dogs a few weeks ago after a woman we knew from the dog park suddenly passed away and her family needed to find a new home for her dog - Joya.
Joya is a sweet Puggle who is small in stature but has a personality so large that it looms over all the other dogs at the local dog park.
We first got to know Joya - and her owner Chantal - during our evening visits to the park soon after moving to Lewes, DE. - and the one thing that immediately stood out was how fierce both Joya and Chantal were.
At the dog park, there is a section set aside for small dogs and most people with small dogs do indeed take their dogs into that area so they can play with someone their own size.
Not Joya...
Chantal would always bring Joya to the general area where all the big dogs play, and we always admired Joya's spunk and affection for Chantal - for any time she might have felt overwhelmed by the big-dog craziness she would scurry over to Chantal and park herself between her protective feet.
It has been more than a month since Joya was last with Chantal - but Joya seems to have moved on and has adjusted well to her new life with Laika and Lulu - after passing Laika's initiation rituals.
Last Friday evening we took all three of the pups to the dog park trying to beat the setting sun.
Joya and I were walking out of the trees when she suddenly noticed a woman walking about 150 feet ahead of us wearing a jacket and hat that looked similar to what Chantal would wear on cold days.
Joya's head popped up and she took off in a sprint thinking she might have finally found Chantal after all this time.
Sadly, when she reached the woman, she realized that it was not to be, and she dropped her head and walked slowly back to me with a sad look on her already sad little Puggle face.
For a moment I was sad too - but then it dawned on me that while Chantal may no longer physically be here, Joya keeps her memory alive in that giant heart of hers in that tiny little body...
Maybe there is a lesson there for all of us.
